’68 C10 Chevy Pickup

Our 1968 C10 Chevrolet Pickup Truck is being given new life by the next generation of the automotive world. This build got its start when our neighbor from DMK Garage donated this pickup to become our first project build. Its first home was Automotive High School in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, where the students began this frame off restoration. The truck was disassembled, and mechanical systems including the suspension, braking, steering and engine were rebuilt. The project is now at Thomas Edison Career and Technical Education High School in Jamaica Queens where the bodywork portion of this build is being completed. Take a look at the photos below to see the transformation of this important pickup unfold.

Throughout the spring ’19 semester the Pit Crew’s focus was locked on getting the engine running. In order to make this happen a temporary dashboard was wired up, the exhaust system was connected, the radiator installed, and the transmission was mounted. All of their hard work paid off when they got to hear the engine roar right before the summer break!

Before the fall ’18 semester ended a milestone was hit when the engine was mounted back onto the truck frame. It had previously been removed to transport the truck to a body shop, but now that the entire truck has a home at Thomas Edison HS the engine was reunited with the frame. Our Pit Crew got some help from members of the Queens Classic Car Club – their guidance was much appreciated as were the extra hands!

The Thomas Edison HS Pit Crew continued to work through the spring on mechanical aspects of the build, especially rebuilding the transmission. The already rebuilt engine was also taken out of storage and brought to Thomas Edison to be mounted back into the truck frame.

Through the fall of 2018 the Pit Crew continued to work to rebuild the transmission. The students identified any parts needed to finish the job by referencing a diagram and comparing it to the parts on hand. Any last pieces needed were installed and after some trial and error everything was put in place to complete the rebuild.

Our truck cab was in need a of a new floor, which we had on hand thanks to a donation from LMC Truck. But this work required expert intervention, and Marshall from High Velocity Auto Body in Inwood, NY stepped up to help. Thanks to his donation of time and skill our truck floor is now welded in place!
